GENERATIONAL SIN

Ezekiel 18:1-32

Growing up, you see the good and the bad characteristics of your parents. Sometimes, we don’t notice the spilling of our parents' tendencies has affected us in our own personhood. We are blinded because we only see through our own eyes. We need someone outside of us to point out, in a loving way, our sin.

In our Christian walk with God, it is necessary to struggle, because our hearts are full of sin. It is because of the fall that sin has entered into the world. Yet, God, in his mercy and grace, wants us to battle against what we may believe to be, “not bad” nuances in our character.

Generational sin doesn’t need to continue on with us. When we accepted Jesus into our hearts, we accepted the fact that we will struggle internally to fight for good. Not in the sense that we are to be perfect, but in the sense that we should bear fruits of the Spirit. We all are in judgement of God, not through our parents’ sin, but our own sin.

As the Scriptures say,

“No one is righteous—
    not even one. (Romans 3:10)

Application:

When you reflect on this passage, really dig deep into your heart. Ask yourself if there are certain tendencies in your character, that you are blinded towards and want to give to God. What does dying to self look like for you? What generational sin do you want to cut out; if there are any? Ask a friend, loved one, or God to help give you insight.

Remember, give yourself grace too. Expect growing pains. It is a process. You are growing. You are learning. Take heart (courage).
